BC. Early influences were Buddhism and Confucianism and the Greek Philosophers.
16th Century. The reformation destroyed much of the superstition that was a vital part of religion at that time.
17th Century. The "mechanik" movement among artisan radicals challenged orthodox hierarchies.
18th Century. The Scottish Philosopher David Hume did much to undermine the idea of God as "the first cause".
19th Century. Many pioneers were imprisoned for atheism or blasphemy. Charles Bradlaugh was elected to parliament and caused great controversy over his refusal to take the oath on the Bible.
Annie Bessant (1847-1933) was an influential secularist, reformer and champion of women's liberation. She stood trial in London for publishing a pamphlet that advocated family planning. The trial caused her to lose the custody of her daughter.
20th Century. The British Humanist Association (BHA) developed from the Ethical Union in 1967. The philosopher Bertrand Russell was an advisor. In the 1960's the BHA adopted the "happy human" logo which has become the symbol of international humanism. The BHA is a registered charity and its president is Linda Smith (a well known comedienne). The **** Humanist Group was formed in **** and is affiliated to the British Humanist Association.
